Sustainable Milton

Sustainable MiltonSustainable Milton, a 501(C)3 non-profit educational and all-volunteer organization, was founded in 2006. It is a member of Milton Changemakers and the Blue Hills Climate Action Coalition. In 2010, Sustainable Milton led the effort to quantify and qualify the town as a MA Green Community through the Department of Energy Resources (DOER). As a result, Milton has received thousands of grant dollars to undertake numerous environmental projects in its municipal facilities.

Its members have offered professional expertise and volunteered in many town capacities, for example, the: Milton Alternative Energy Committee (2010-2016); Milton Wind Energy Committee; and Solarize Milton initiative (2018). Since its earliest days, documentary movie nights, panel discussions, Green Home Fairs, book lectures, and "Sustainably Speaking" articles in the Milton Times have enriched our general public. For the past five years, Sustainable Milton has awarded the Green Student Leadership Award, comprising a monetary stipend and book, to deserving Milton High School seniors. It supported the single use plastic bag ban at Town Meeting (Fall 2018) and collected Mercury-containing button batteries around town for many years. On May Day 2021, it collaborated with Erica DeDonato, Milton Environmental Coordinator, to resurrect an annual Spring Greenup Day.

Its mission to create a healthy, fossil fuel-free, and environmentally equitable planet remains incomplete, and You have a role to play.

Milton Community Engagement Platform

Sustainable Milton has partnered with Mass Energize to create a new online community engagement platform for Milton Residents. This platform is intended to provide Milton Residents with meaningful actions that supports climate change efforts and step by step guides on how to make these actions a reality.

The 2021 Climate Roadmap, passed in March of 2021, has set Massachusetts on a journey to get climate-warming pollution under control by 2050. As a primarily residential community, the vast majority of Milton's emissions are from our private homes and vehicles, so achieving these climate goals will require all of us to participate and take action. Fortunately, the actions needed are more straight-forward and accessible than you may believe.

Sustainable Milton has partnered with MassEnergize to create a climate action resource for Milton residents. This website is intended to provide Milton residents with step-by-step guides to practical and meaningful actions they can take to reduce climate warming pollution and prevent the worst impacts of climate change.

The website can be accessed by clicking on the following link: Milton Climate Action

Some of the actions found on this page include:

While the individual actions needed to address climate change are similar from place to place, the resources and programs available to facilitate these actions depend on where you live. This platform provides resources tailored to Milton residents, and what individuals can do right here in town. The hope is to build community by taking action to combat climate change while seeing and celebrating everyone's collective impact.
