Milton Community Microgrid Study

Milton's Planning & Community Development and Engineering Departments are studying the potential for a microgrid system that would help critical Milton infrastructure build its resilience to increasing climate and weather stressors on our energy supply. This "microgrid" would support Milton Town Hall, Milton Police Headquarters, and the Winter Valley senior affordable housing community, with the opportunity to expand to other locations.

This project is generously funded through a $50,000 grant from the Metropolitan Area Planning Council's (MAPC) Accelerating Climate Resilience Grant Program. We are following the lead of other communities that have been exploring microgrid solutions to address our climate-driven energy concerns, including Chelsea, Cambridge, and Boston's Chinatown. A microgrid system can provide us with local renewable power in the case of an outage as well as switch to local power during peak times, reducing costs and increasing energy efficiency.

On February 9, 2024, we shared the draft report of our feasibility study for public review and feedback. A community forum was held on February 20, 2024, allowing residents to hear directly about the report and to collaborate on its final version. Both the report and the presentation are available in the resources table below.

Feedback was received until March 9, 2024, and a final report is now available for community review.

At the start of the new year, Milton was awarded $150,000 through an EmPower grant from the MA Clean Energy Center to continue this work at Winter Valley. That work will continue to make progress on the recommendations in the final report.
