Not sure how to dispose of an item? We can help.

First, check the MassDEP Recyclopedia to see if it's recyclable in your blue cart.

If you can't recycle the item curbside, look for your item below. More information about the Recycling Center can be found on the Recycling Center page. The Recycling Center is open from 9 am to noon on the first Saturday of each month.

If you don't see your item here, check MA Beyond the Bin to see how you can dispose of it. You can also call DPW at 617-898-4900 for information. Some items, like construction debris or auto parts, may require you to hire a private hauler.

All trash stickers, including yearly trash, weekly trash, yard waste, and large item stickers, are available at the Treasurer's Office at Town Hall, 617-898-4853.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Milton DPW encourages residents to follow the three principles of recycling: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Wherever possible, we have provided information about how items may be reused or recycled before they are disposed of as trash.

Air conditioner / Dehumidifier

Asphalt

You may be able to reuse asphalt or concrete as garden cobble.	Some vendors will dispose of construction waste for a fee - see Construction Debris. Many of these vendors recycle the material.	Asphalt may not be disposed of as trash. Please see MA Beyond the Bin for disposal of loads of wood, concrete, or asphalt. Automobiles

Cars that are not resellable may be donated to many organizations. The list below is incomplete - check with your charity of choice to confirm that they accept automobile donations.

Most automobile donation programs require some proof of ownership for the car. This may exist as the car's title, registration, or other paperwork. Your charity of choice will be able to help you determine what you need.

Baby Clothing & Items

Cradles to Crayons will accept donations of new and gently used baby and toddler items, such as clothing, shoes, and books. For a full list of items they accept and do not accept.

Basketball Hoops

Consider re-selling your hoop on Facebook or Craigslist, or giving it away to someone who could use it.	Bring metal pieces to the Recycling Center, where it can be recycled for free as scrap metal.	Break down the hoop into pieces smaller than 4 feet or 40lbs. Usually, doing so will require splitting of metal beams and separation of plastic parts. If the hoop is weighted with sand, please empty the sand before disposing. Place one $4 sticker on each piece and dispose at the curb on your trash collection day. Batteries

Most car seats should be thrown away due to age or potential recalls. You can dispose of them on your regular trash day without an appointment. Place a trash sticker on the item and cut the straps to indicate that the seat should not be reused.

Carpet

If your carpet is still reusable, consider donating to charity or reselling.	For other ways to dispose of textiles, see MA Beyond the Bin.	Carpet and rugs may be disposed of in curbside trash only if it is placed into rolls that are 4 feet or less in length (preferably smaller) with each roll weighing 40 lbs. or less. Carpet must be rolled and tied. One $4 trash sticker must be attached to each separate roll.

Cell phones

Keep a spare phone around in case one breaks. It's also a good idea to keep a charged phone in your car glovebox for emergencies, because all phones can call 911 (even without a service plan).	Cell phones may be disposed of free of charge at the recycling center from 9 am-12 pm on the first Saturday of the month. The Town donates them to a charity that reuses scrap electronic material. Chairs / Small Furniture

Gently used furniture can be donated to Habitat for Humanity Re-Store or FurnitureBanks.org.	Untreated wood can be used as scrap for everything from firewood to composting. Treated wood can be dangerous to disassemble and should be disposed. Upholstered furniture in non-reusable condition should be disposed.	Curbside, $4 per item (1 sticker). You may set out 1 item per week.

Christmas Trees & Wreaths

Natural/"Real" tree or wreath	N/A	Dispose of your tree on the Town pickup day. Trees are composted are sent to a woodchipper.	Use a private removal company to pick up or drop off your tree at your convenience.
Artificial/"Fake" tree or wreath	Purchase a reusable tree or wreath to use for several years.	Consider donating your tree to a local nonprofit, charity, or church.	Divide your tree into its individual pieces. Attach a trash sticker to each piece and dispose on any regular trash collection day. Construction of artificial trees varies, so call DPW at 617-898-4900 if you need additional guidance.

Clothing

Cookware that has exhausted its usable life can be disposed of in curbside trash.

Your mattress or box spring will be picked up the following Tuesday. Mixed paper

Mixed paper is different types of paper mixed together. Examples include phone books, magazines, junk mail, office paper, and paperboard boxes (like cracker boxes).

Reuse paper as scrap paper, or packing or art supplies.	Recycle clean paper. "Clean" means unsoiled by food. Paper that has been printed with ink is recyclable.	Paper that has been soiled by food should be thrown away in the trash.

Motor oil

Do not reuse used motor oil.	Do not recycle motor oil or containers that previously held motor oil (unless cleaned).	Never pour used oil down a storm drain or mix it with other materials. There are multiple ways to dispose of used oil: Call the DEP Used Oil Hotline at 617-556-1022 to find the nearest drop-off location to you. Bring your used oil to the DPW yard weekdays from 8 am-12 pm. The DPW will take it from you for $4 up to three gallons (only trash stickers and personal checks accepted, no cash). The oil must be unmixed with other substances. Remember your used oil filter contains dirty oil. Pop a hole in the top of the filter with a screwdriver and let it drain for 12 to 14 hours into a container. Then you may safely throw the filter away in your regular trash.

Prom Gowns / Evening Gowns

Consider donating gently-used evening wear to benefit young women in need. You can donate a dress to Belle of the Ball by dropping it off at the nearest Anton's Cleaners or Jordan's Furniture. Other local charities including Milton Teens in Need will also accept dress donations.
